Your furnace blower has an important job: moving heated air through the ductwork and into your home. If the blower motor fails or isn't operating properly, the furnace may still produce heat at the heat exchanger but be unable to properly distribute that heat throughout the house.
What Does a Furnace Blower Motor Do?
After your furnace burners ignite and the heat exchanger begins warming up, the furnace blower turns on and moves air across the heat exchanger.
That heated air is then pushed through the supply ductwork and registers throughout your home.
At the same time, the return ductwork brings air from the house back toward the furnace so the process can continue.
This means a properly operating blower is essential for both airflow and heat distribution.
When the blower isn't moving enough air, the problem can affect much more than simply how warm the house feels.
What Are the Signs of a Bad Furnace Blower Motor?
Some common symptoms that may lead us to investigate the blower motor include:
- Furnace running but little or no air coming from the vents
- Blower motor won't start
- Blower starts and stops unexpectedly
- Blower motor won't shut off
- Weak airflow from the registers
- Grinding, squealing or rattling noises
- Burning or electrical smell from the furnace
- Furnace overheating
- Furnace repeatedly shutting down on high limit
- Blower motor works intermittently
- Furnace produces heat but doesn't distribute it through the house
These symptoms don't automatically mean the blower motor has failed.
There are several other airflow and electrical problems that can produce similar symptoms.
My Furnace Is Heating but There's No Air Coming From the Vents
If the burners are operating but the blower isn't moving air, the furnace can quickly become too hot.
The furnace's high-limit safety control may then shut the burners down to protect the equipment.
This can create a situation where the homeowner notices the furnace repeatedly starting and stopping without properly heating the house.
A failed blower motor is one possible cause, but we may also need to investigate the blower controls, capacitor on applicable motors, ECM module, control board, wiring or another electrical problem.
That's why the blower system needs to be tested before replacing the motor.
Can a Bad Blower Motor Cause a Furnace to Overheat?
Yes.
The furnace relies on airflow across the heat exchanger to transfer heat into the air being circulated throughout the home.
If the blower stops working or isn't moving enough air, heat can build up inside the furnace.
Eventually, the furnace may reach the temperature at which the high-limit switch opens and shuts down the burners.
However, a failing blower isn't the only cause of an overheating furnace.
Restricted airflow can also result from problems such as:
- A severely dirty furnace filter
- A heavily contaminated blower wheel
- Blocked or restricted return airflow
- Closed or restricted registers
- An airflow setup problem
- Other problems within the HVAC system
The cause needs to be diagnosed rather than simply resetting the furnace.
Why Is My Furnace Blower Making Noise?
A blower motor or blower assembly can develop noticeable noises as components begin to wear.
You may hear:
Grinding, squealing, scraping, rattling or humming.
The type and location of the noise can help us determine what needs to be inspected.
Sometimes the motor itself is failing. Other times the problem can involve the blower wheel, motor bearings, mounting, debris or another component in the blower assembly.
A new noise from the furnace shouldn't automatically be assumed to be normal operation.
Weak Airflow Doesn't Always Mean a Bad Blower Motor
This is particularly important.
If you're getting air from the registers but the airflow seems weaker than it used to be, don't automatically assume the blower motor needs replacement.
The blower is only one part of the airflow system.
We may also need to consider the condition of the furnace filter, blower wheel, evaporator coil, return ductwork and supply duct system.
This is also where our background in both HVAC service and duct cleaning can be useful.
We're not simply looking at whether the motor spins. We're looking at the airflow through the complete system and what may be restricting it.
Can a Dirty Blower Wheel Cause Furnace Problems?
Absolutely.
This is something we've seen in the field.
Over time, dust and debris can accumulate on the blades of a blower wheel. When the buildup becomes significant, it can affect how effectively the blower moves air.
Reduced airflow can place additional stress on the HVAC system and contribute to overheating and high-limit trips.
This doesn't mean every dirty blower requires immediate removal and cleaning. The actual condition of the blower and the airflow through the system need to be considered.
But if we find a blower wheel heavily covered in dust and debris, we're not going to ignore it.
Blower Motor Won't Shut Off
A blower that continues running isn't automatically a failed blower motor.
The motor may simply be operating because something else is telling it to run.
Depending on the furnace, possible causes can include thermostat settings, furnace control problems, limit-related conditions or other electrical issues.
This is another example of why replacing a motor based solely on a symptom can lead to an unnecessary repair.
We need to determine why the blower is being energized.
