Can You Clean Your Own Air Ducts? An HVAC Technician Explains
While researching what homeowners are saying about duct cleaning online, I came across an interesting comment on Reddit.
Normally, I wouldn't write an entire article based on one person's comment. But this particular homeowner raised several concerns that I think illustrate something important:
Most homeowners don't really know what happens during a professional duct cleaning.
And why would they?
Unless you work in HVAC or duct cleaning, there's no reason you would necessarily understand why we're moving around your registers, connecting a large vacuum hose to your ductwork, creating access holes or using compressed-air tools inside your system.
So rather than criticizing this homeowner, I want to use their experience to explain what actually happens during a professional duct cleaning and why we do it.
Here is the original comment:
our ducts need to be cleaned. We got quotes anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500 for the job. We were not prepared for the disruption and damage they were talking about doing. They wanted us to move heavy furniture away from every vent grate in the house so they could cover them to seal off the system and also so they could vacuum each of them. Makes sense, sort of, but would have been a huge deal for us to actually do it. Then, they said they had to "access" the delivery ducts and air return ducts every 8 feet. The estimator literally pointed at ceiling tiles and finished basement walls and told me the spots that the duct cleaner would remove and disassemble. Naturally the contract they sent to us specified in bold type that they do not repair or replace any of that stuff that they remove or cut into. I wanted him to give me an estimate for a more limited project of just cleaning out the big air return ducts in the basement (easily accessed) and that we did not want people going through every room of our house. He either did not get it, or just ignored me and kept talking about the wave of disruption that he was planning for the crew to carry out. Another company just did a telephone estimate and would not come and look at the house and go over with me what I wanted to have done.
Finally, we just said the hell with it. We've been in this house for 21 years and never cleaned the ducts and I guess it will be another 21 years before that ever gets done. We do have a shop vac from home depot, and a 20 foot long hose for it (purchased separately) and we will access the big air returns in the basement and do those ourselves this summer.
There are several things here worth addressing.
$1,000 to $2,500 for Residential Duct Cleaning?
The first thing that caught my attention was the price.
The homeowner says:
“We got quotes anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500 for the job.”
Without seeing this particular house, I can't tell you whether there was something unusual about the system that justified those prices.
Maybe it's an enormous house. Maybe there are multiple HVAC systems. Maybe there are unusual accessibility problems.
But for an ordinary residential home, $1,000 to $2,500 would certainly get my attention.
For most standard residential duct-cleaning jobs, homeowners should generally be looking at something closer to the $350 to $425 range, although the actual price depends on the size and layout of the home and what work is being performed.

Setting the price aside, however, the homeowner raised some legitimate questions about the actual cleaning process.
Do You Need to Move Furniture Away From Your Vents?
The homeowner wrote:
“They wanted us to move heavy furniture away from every vent grate in the house so they could cover them to seal off the system and also so they could vacuum each of them.”
On this point, I'm actually going to side with the duct-cleaning company.
Heavy furniture should generally be moved before the duct cleaner arrives.
You've hired us to clean your ductwork, not to rearrange your furniture.
There's also a practical reason for this.
If you already know that a piece of furniture is extremely heavy, having your duct cleaner try to move it creates an unnecessary risk.
We don't want to injure ourselves.
And you probably don't want us scratching your hardwood floor, damaging your furniture or breaking something while trying to move a heavy object.
Now, let's be reasonable.
If there's one bed or bookcase partially blocking a register, we're not going to walk away from the job.
But if we arrive and every register is covered by heavy furniture and the mechanical room is inaccessible because it's packed with belongings, that's a different situation.
That's why we ask customers to provide reasonable access to their registers, return grilles and mechanical room before we arrive.
Why Does a Duct Cleaner Need Access to the Main Ductwork?
This was probably the homeowner's biggest concern:
“they said they had to "access" the delivery ducts and air return ducts every 8 feet. The estimator literally pointed at ceiling tiles and finished basement walls and told me the spots that the duct cleaner would remove and disassemble. Naturally the contract they sent to us specified in bold type that they do not repair or replace any of that stuff that they remove or cut into.”
I believe what they're describing here is access to the main supply and return trunk lines.
This is where homeowners need to understand what professional duct cleaning actually involves.
A lot of people imagine that we show up with a giant vacuum hose, connect it somewhere near the furnace, push a button and five minutes later every duct in the house is spotless.
I wish it worked that way.
If that were all we had to do, those $99 whole-house duct-cleaning advertisements might actually make sense.
But that's not how proper source-removal duct cleaning works.
Your Main Trunk Lines Are the Highways of Your Duct System
Most forced-air homes have main supply and return trunk lines.
Your smaller branch ducts connect to these main trunks and travel to the different rooms throughout the house.
Some of those main trunks can travel considerable distances across a basement.
So simply connecting a vacuum at one end doesn't automatically remove material sitting throughout the entire system.
The debris has to be loosened and moved.
That's why we need access.
Why Do We Make Holes in the Ductwork?
On a typical duct-cleaning job, there may be larger access points created in the main trunk lines so the main vacuum hose can be connected.
Depending on the equipment being used, that main hose may be approximately 8 to 10 inches in diameter.
We may also create smaller access holes along accessible portions of the main trunk.
Why?
Because those smaller openings allow us to insert agitation equipment into the ductwork.
That might include compressed-air tools, whips or other devices designed to loosen accumulated material.
The process is basically:
Create negative pressure → agitate the debris → move it toward the collection equipment.
That's the part of duct cleaning many homeowners never see.

So when you see a duct cleaner drilling a small access hole into an exposed sheet-metal trunk, they're not necessarily damaging your ductwork.
They're creating access to clean it.
We will properly close these holes when the work is complete.
What About Drop Ceilings?
The Reddit homeowner was understandably concerned about ceiling tiles being removed.
If you have a drop ceiling, that's generally not a major issue.
Drop ceilings are essentially suspended ceilings designed with removable tiles.
If we need access above one, we can normally remove the necessary tiles, perform the work and put the tiles back when we're finished.
That's very different from cutting through a finished drywall ceiling.
What If My Basement Ceiling Is Drywalled?
This is where things become more complicated.
If your basement is completely finished and the main trunk lines are hidden behind drywall, we may not be able to access every part of the ductwork without opening portions of the ceiling or walls.
That doesn't mean we're automatically going to start cutting holes throughout your finished basement.
This should be discussed with you first.
If you don't want any drywall disturbed, that's your decision.
We can still perform the cleaning using the access available to us, but there may be portions of the main trunk that we can't directly access as effectively.
That's simply the reality of working with concealed ductwork.
Can We Cut and Repair the Drywall?
Could we cut an opening in drywall?
Yes. However:
We're HVAC technicians, not professional drywallers.
Drywall finishing is its own trade.
While we can make an access opening, I wouldn't pretend that we're professional drywall finishers who are going to mud, tape, sand and finish your ceiling to the same standard as someone who does that work every day.
We've also had customers tell us:
“Go ahead and cut it. I'll repair the drywall afterward.”
That's perfectly acceptable.
The important thing is that the homeowner understands what's going to happen before anything is cut.
Can You Clean Only the Return Ducts?
The homeowner then wrote:
“I wanted him to give me an estimate for a more limited project of just cleaning out the big air return ducts”
I'll be honest.
I've never had a customer ask for a limited cleaning like this.
Could we do it?
Yes, depending on what the customer actually wants.
If someone specifically wants only the return side cleaned and understands the limitations, we can discuss it.
And there's some logic behind concentrating on the return side.
The return ductwork is bringing household air back toward the furnace and filter, and in many homes the return side is considerably dirtier than the supply side.
However, if you're already paying hundreds of dollars to have professional equipment brought to your house, I would explain why cleaning only a small accessible section of the system may not give you much value for your money.
At the end of the day, though, it's your house.
We'll explain what we recommend and why, but the customer ultimately decides what work they want performed.
Can I Clean My Own Ducts With a Shop Vac?
This brings us to what I think is the most interesting part of the Reddit comment:
“We do have a shop vac from home depot, and a 20 foot long hose for it (purchased separately) and we will access the big air returns in the basement and do those ourselves this summer.”
I have heard this from customers over the years.
And I want to make an important distinction.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with using your shop vac to remove debris you can reach.
If you remove a return grille and see dog hair, dust, toys or debris sitting underneath it, vacuum it out.
Why wouldn't you?
But don't confuse that with professionally cleaning your duct system.
The difference comes down to something extremely important:
negative pressure.
Why Is Negative Pressure So Important?
Professional duct cleaning isn't simply about having something that sucks up dirt.
The section of the HVAC system being cleaned should be maintained under continuous negative pressure.
NADCA's ACR Standard requires continuous negative pressure in the portion of the HVAC system being cleaned relative to the surrounding indoor space.
Why?
Because when we start agitating dust and debris inside your ductwork, we don't want that material being blown throughout your house.
We want the airflow moving toward our collection equipment.
That's the entire principle behind negative-air duct cleaning.
Think about what we're doing.
We connect powerful vacuum collection equipment to the duct system.
We establish negative pressure.
Then we go farther into the system and use compressed air, whips and other agitation tools to loosen material.
The negative pressure helps carry that loosened material toward the vacuum.
We're not simply vacuuming the spot immediately in front of a hose. We're controlling airflow through the section of ductwork being cleaned.
That's an enormous difference.
Rotobrush Helps Explain the Difference
There's professional duct-cleaning equipment on the market commonly known as Rotobrush.
Rotobrush equipment can use a rotating brush together with vacuum suction at the cleaning head.
It's obviously far more sophisticated than a homeowner sticking a shop-vac hose into a register.
But there's an important distinction.
A standard brush-and-vacuum Rotobrush setup should not automatically be confused with a negative-air system.
In fact, Rotobrush itself distinguishes between its brush-and-vacuum machines and its dedicated negative-air machines.

Why does that distinction matter?
Because NADCA's standard calls for continuous negative pressure in the portion of the HVAC system being cleaned.
So here's the point I'm making:
If even professional brush-and-vacuum equipment isn't automatically creating the continuous negative pressure throughout the section of ductwork being cleaned that NADCA calls for, then a homeowner's shop vac certainly isn't doing it.
And that's why you cannot call cleaning your vents duct clenaing.
“But My Shop Vac Has Lots of Suction”
I'm sure it does.
That's not the issue.
A shop vac creates suction at the end of its hose.
Push that hose down a return and it will pick up material that gets close enough to the opening.
You'll probably remove some dust.
You'll probably remove pet hair.
You may even pull out quite a bit of debris.
Great. That section is now cleaner.
But what about debris 30 feet away?
What about the other branches?
What about material attached to the bottom and sides of the main trunk?
What about debris that needs to be agitated before it will move?
And most importantly:
Is your shop vac maintaining the entire section you're cleaning under sufficient continuous negative pressure while that debris is being agitated?
That's the difference.
Professional duct cleaning combines access, agitation, airflow and vacuum collection to remove material from throughout the ductwork.
That's why professional equipment exists in the first place.
If a $150 shop vac and a 20-foot hose could accomplish the same thing, we'd happily save ourselves thousands of dollars in professional duct-cleaning equipment and head to Home Depot for a shop vac instead.
So Why Does Professional Duct Cleaning Seem So Invasive?
This brings us back to the homeowner who inspired this article.
I actually understand their reaction.
Imagine you've never had duct cleaning performed before.
You think somebody is going to arrive with a vacuum.
Instead, the estimator starts talking about:
moving furniture,
removing registers,
connecting an 8–10 inch vacuum hose,
drilling access holes,
removing ceiling tiles,
and possibly accessing ductwork hidden behind finished ceilings.
Without an explanation, that sounds excessive.
But there's a reason for much of it.
We're trying to remove material from a duct system that can travel throughout an entire house.
To do that properly, we need access.
We need agitation.
And we need sufficient vacuum collection and negative pressure to control and remove what we're loosening.
Professional duct cleaning is more involved than pushing a vacuum hose into a register.
But it shouldn't be mysterious.
