What Mr. Lube Can Teach Us About HVAC Maintenance
If your car breaks down, are you going to take it to Mr. Lube in Cornwall or in the SDG area?
Probably not.
Mr. Lube specializes primarily in vehicle maintenance. You take your vehicle there for things like oil changes and routine maintenance, while major repairs are handled somewhere else.
SDG Duct Cleaning takes a similar approach to HVAC maintenance.
Duct cleaning and HVAC maintenance are our primary focus. We can perform HVAC repairs during regular business hours, but our niche is helping homeowners maintain the equipment they already own — including furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, ductless systems and other HVAC equipment.
Just like you don't have to take your vehicle back to the dealership for every oil change, you don't have to use the company that installed your HVAC equipment for every maintenance appointment.
Will Using Another Company Void My HVAC Warranty?
One concern we hear from homeowners is that they have to use the company that installed their furnace or air conditioner for maintenance or their warranty will be void.
The simple truth is, No.
Your manufacturer's parts warranty is generally provided by the equipment manufacturer, not the HVAC contractor who installed the equipment.
Labour warranties are different. An installing contractor may provide its own labour warranty for a certain period of time, but that depends on the agreement you received when the system was installed.
There is also a common belief that missing one annual maintenance automatically voids the entire manufacturer's warranty. This is generally false. Provided that you are able to show, if asked, that you have had your furnace maintained at some point, you are generally covered.
The important point is that you generally aren't required to have the original installing contractor perform all of your routine HVAC maintenance simply because they installed the equipment.
HVAC Maintenance Without the Upselling
This brings us back to the Mr. Lube comparison.
When you take your vehicle in for an oil change, that's the service you went there for.
We believe HVAC maintenance should be much the same.
We're there to maintain your HVAC equipment.
Unfortunately, HVAC maintenance appointments can sometimes become an opportunity to sell additional products or services.
If your furnace or air conditioner is 10–15 years old, you may have experienced a maintenance appointment that quickly turned into a conversation about replacing the entire system.
But what if your equipment is relatively new?
You may not hear a replacement pitch, but you could be offered a protection or maintenance plan instead.
At SDG Duct Cleaning, maintenance is the service we're there to provide.
What About Emergency HVAC Service?
The Mr. Lube comparison works here too.
You wouldn't expect an oil-change shop to handle every major automotive emergency, and we don't pretend to be a 24-hour HVAC emergency company.
SDG Duct Cleaning does not currently provide 24/7 emergency HVAC service. We are first and foremost a duct cleaning and HVAC maintenance provider. However, we can and do perform HVAC repairs during our regular service hours.
We're not against homeowners using their regular HVAC company's emergency service when they need it.
However, it is worth pointing out the following fact about after-hours HVAC repairs:
Some after-hours problems can be repaired immediately. A dirty flame sensor, blocked condensate drain, pressure-switch issue or another relatively minor problem may be something a technician can correct on the spot.
But if the technician discovers a failed:
- inducer motor
- blower motor
- gas valve
- control board
- or another equipment-specific component
the repair may still have to wait until the required part can be sourced from an HVAC supplier.
That means an emergency service call doesn't necessarily mean your furnace will be repaired that night.
